What started out as a 12 week commitment to the track and field team ended up as a 4 year high school career. I steadily improved over the course of 4 years of high school and ended up being a varsity runner during my last two seasons.
While I was never the fastest runner on the team, it quickly became an important part of my life. I enjoyed the challenge and the constant pursuit of a new personal best. I ran occasionally while attending Truman State University but I took a break from serious training. I returned to the world of distance running in when I was hired as a teacher and coach at my alma mater, De Smet Jesuit High School.
The relationships I build with the athletes year after year drive my passion for running.

This has got to be a good move after our World Championship success where GB placed 3 riders on the podium in January " says organiser Dave Mellor "Allowing more riders to experience National level racing, rather than restricting field sizes is a really positive move. Whilst the elevation is pan flat the mix of tarmac, grass and woodland provides a course where there is literally no chance to rest and the technical aspects can really catch out tired riders as we saw in the Nationals where Helen Wyman looked to have the race won only to slip on the last grassy bank and to be overhauled by Nicki Brammeier for one of the most exciting of races.
We've also taken the race into the Green Triangle a favourite training section of the Club youngsters and this should add a new dimension to the course and allow the commentating team headed up by Matt Payne to see more of the action" says Course Director, George Watkins. Moving to a two day format of course brings it's challenges in a public venue, there will be some late night strip down in the woods to enable the early morning dog walkers unrestricted access and then early morning reinstatement by George Watkins and his team but one of the hardest jobs is getting enough volunteers to marshal and enable the race runs safely.
It's not really feasible for me to personally go and ask each person to help, we put out requests via the club email and Facebook pages and I thank the pro-active members who reply and volunteer without being asked personally. It's so rewarding putting on a great event that is appreciated by the riders and a simple thank you from riders gives our volunteers such a buzz" says Sarah.
All of these riders are looking for good positions rather than podiums at this stage, all new to National level racing other than Ewan Grivell-Mellor who is looking to balance finishing college and starting full time work and training.
I've been working nights in an artisan bakery, 2am to 10am and that has been a real challenge. I've just started a day job now and so hopefully I will start to feel less tired and the form will come. As this is an Internationally sanctioned race we could see more continental riders arrive in Shrewsbury along with the riders who have already confirmed they will be racing.
Racing starts at 12 noon on Saturday with Sunday's start at 10am with a 2 minutes silence for Remembrance at 11am.
We look forward to seeing you there. National Fitness Day on Wednesday, September 7th looks like being the busiest one yet.
